Thermal tape, also known as thermal adhesive tape or thermal interface tape, is a type of thermal interface material that is used to provide a heat path and improve the thermal transfer between the heat source and heat sink.
The tape is typically made from materials such as PET or fibreglass mesh combined with thermally conductive ceramic particles and acrylic adhesive. The adhesive allows the tape to be applied directly to the heat source and the heat sink, creating a direct thermal connection between the two.
Thermal tape is a convenient alternative to other thermal interface materials such as thermal grease or thermal paste, as it is easy to apply and does not require any additional hardware for dispensing. It can be cut to the desired size and shape, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Thermal tape is typically used in electronic applications such as computers, smartphones, and other devices that generate heat. They can also be used in industrial and automotive applications, where effective heat dissipation is critical. They help to keep the component at its optimal operating temperature and also prevent thermal overload, which can cause damage to the component.
Thermal tapes typically have thermal conductivities of around 1-2 W/mK. As they are thin materials they have low thermal impedance and can handle high temperatures and thermal cycling, which makes them suitable for use in high-power electronic applications, including power semiconductors, LED lighting and telecommunications equipment.
